Restoration expert Robert Harris (and countless others) worked for over a year from the best available print materials (as the recent negatives are badly damaged and former) to restore the first and second films to their unique theatrical glory, which is something these iconic films of American Cinema deserve. If you are looking for a “wow” disc to present off your Blu-ray home theater sound and video, this is not it. If you are looking to experience fresh American Gangster cinema in its 1970’s glory, this is as finish as you are ever likely to score, muted sepia-esque color, film grain and all.
These were not done exclusively for the home market. The priority was that they were restored for theatres, because that is where they would be judged the most critically, and all indications are that they do not disappoint. Never glimpse these films in your living room with the lights on. Leer them like you do in the theater, lights out, to delight in the inconvenience that went into these films.

A generous restoration job, “The Godfather-The Coppola Restoration Gif Spot” includes all three recent films as they were presented theatrical. It doesn’t have the version that Coppola lop for TV and presented in chronological order. THe first two films are masterpieces and while the third is severely flawed, it does have its moments.
Keep in mind that these were restored for theatrical showings NOT for the home video market and, as such, these probably aren’t the best Blu-rays to consume to prove off your home video system. Some people will no doubt be disappointed but, quite frankly, these films have never looked this worthy before on home video. Is this a vast step up from the DVDs? Yes and no. The Blu-ray does provide better resolution but hold in mind it also shows the flaws inherent in the recent films (and some people will regard the grainy images as being a flaw) .
First support in mind that “The Godfather” was meant to glance grainy so those of you who disfavor grain will probably wonder why they didn’t eliminate it. That’s because to do so would have required altering the scrutinize of the film not restoring it and the usual result of eliminating film grain is that you lose detail. The result also makes it scrutinize like the actors are walking wax dummies. Some scenes are remarkable grainer than others but that’s the plan the film was meant to discover.
According to Harris in an article at American Cinematographer, the new film was in extremely poor shape and, in some instances, frames from outtakes had to be subsituted because afflict had crept into the frame place of the film.
“The Godfather Fraction II” was in better shape for a variety of reasons and didn’t require quite as grand work on it as the first film.
“The Godfather Section III” since it archaic different development techniques from the first three (and for other reasons you can read at the American Cinematographer website) and only required Harris to match the sunless levels and design definite the color method was done correctly.
Robert Harris has done a agreeable job on the restoration of the film. Colors are bolder than before with nice crisp images as cinematographer Gordon Willis originally shot the film. While the DVD looks terrific, the Blu-ray looks positively pretty. Does it perceive like a film released last year? No, of course not that would be impossible but Harris working with Coppola and Willis has brought the film into the 21st century without overprocessing the image (like the new Blu-ray “Patton”) and staying apt to the new ogle of the new film elements if they were in pristine condition.
All of the previous extras from the boxed station have been ported over in HD along with some current extras including “The Masterpiece That Almost Wasn’t” documenting the difficult birth of the film from Paramount asking Puzo to initially change the period setting to 1970’s Los Angeles to the constant threat of Coppola being fired during the shooting of the film. “When the Shooting Stops” covers the post-production efforts of editing and scoring the film.
THe amusing “Godfather World” has renowned directors illustrated the cultural impact of the film and features bits and pieces from “The Simpsons” to “South Park”.”Emulsion Rescue documents Robert Harris’ restoration efforts of the aging film elements. “Four Short FIlms of “The Godfather” is funny as well.
The 12 page booklet included with the Blu-ray was clearly designed for the DVD because it’s considerable too great to fit in the Blu-ray holder (it’s glued to the outside packaging) . It’s unique to make the booklet like this as you’ll have to either tidy it down to fit inside, crawl it in where it might possible become creased or store it separately to prevent wear and hasten. It has a bit of info on the Oscars for the films and the credits. It’s an weird extra to include because it doesn’t have anything truly principal NOT included on the Blu-ray or DVD boxed plot.
I’d highly recommend this compelling saga on Blu-ray and DVD. It’s a big improvement on the previous state, has original and previously released extras (including Coppola’s often blunt commentary tracks) and looks terrific. For those looking for the TV version that ran in chronological order fair be aware it’s not here as piece of this position although many of the deleted scenes traditional to assemble that one are included.

Most movies about the Second World War either deal with audacious men performing heroically as expected or less daring men doing the unexpected. In HELL TO ETERNITY the focus is on a man who is neither gallant nor cowardly. He is no Henry Fleming dreaming of big exploits. Rather he is a man driven by detest for the same people whom earlier he had once called his occupy. He is Guy Gabaldon, a true life U. S. Marine who won several decorations for valor fighting the Japanese on Saipan.
The movie begins with Gabaldon as a boy living in a panicked street in Los Angeles. He is homeless, friendless, and more than a limited filled with rage at a world that has no station for a awful boy of mixed Hispanic origin. HELL TO ETERNITY is the rare war movie whose focus on killing is not to showcase either the fighting skills of the individual soldier or to form a national sense of patriotism and warlike fervor. Instead, director Phil Karlson uses the confusing images of war to mirror the equally confusing turmoil of one man who is called on to shift mental gears once too often.

The Mack (1973), probably one of the most referenced movies in the hip hop culture, on appearance has all the qualities of a blaxploitation film, but a closer and thoughtful watch might give you a different concept. Directed by documentarian Michael Campus and starring Max Julien, Richard Pryor, and Carol Accelerate, The Mack presents a portrait taken in time of a particular lifestyle not many ever come by to witness.
The movie opens with two men, Goldie (Julien) and Slim (Pryor), fervent in a gunfight in a junkyard. Seemingly out numbered, Goldie tells Slim to assume off (wouldn’t have been my choice as Slim is sporting what appears to be a M16 while Goldie’s sporting a handgun) . Goldie soon recruits some ladies of the night, and has to deal with deplorable police detectives, rival players, and various other underworld characters during his meteoric rise (he gets chosen as The Mack of the Year at an annual players ball) . As Goldie’s popularity, or notoriety, increases, so does the pressures, both internal and external, along with the violence, and begins carrying over into his family, and forces Goldie to resolve where it’s at…
The Mack certainly does seem to glorify these men who deal in the flesh trade, with their extravagant lifestyles, flashy cars, and gigantic wads of cash, but the glamour is speedy overshadowed by the harsh realities presented as the stories progresses, and objective how considerable one has to give up to be a success in that particular business. There are a lot of laughs to be had here, maybe not intentional, but the film is glowing dated. Between the dialog, stereotypes, and trash-talking criminals, there was an underlying sadness for me in the realness of the disgusting attitudes depicted towards the women, objectified to the point where they weren’t even people anymore, merely tools of the trade, a means to obtaining material possessions through the sale of their bodies, and also how many examine up to these men, idolizing them, thus perpetuating their activities. Shot on set in Oakland, and featuring exact individuals within the community, the film forgoes the slickness of a Hollywood budget, but gains a valid grittiness one wouldn’t be able to reproduce on a soundstage. The dialog, a lot of it improvised, and some indistinguishable, only adds to the realistic quality of the film, but also isolates it, in my thought, within the time period in which it was made. I did like how the film ended, nicely book ending the beginning, bringing the main character burly circle.

Presented here is a very kindly looking wide shroud version of the film, which runs approximately 110 minutes. Special features include an novel theatrical trailer, a commentary track featuring star Max Julien, producer Harvey Bernard, director Michael Campus, and actors Richard Anthony Williams, Annazette Wander, Don Gordon, and George Murdok, along with an obliging 38 runt featurette titled Mackin’ Ain’t Easy, which looks succor on the making of the film, detailing all the problems and issues that arose, especially those filming on area within Oakland in the early 70’s. The Mack is probably my approved blaxploitation film ever. It gives detailed insight into life as the godfather of pimps on the hard streets of Oakland in the 70’s. But his brother is one of the leading activist against exploiting shaded people to effect money. The sub-plot helps magnify the reality of being a successful sunless man in a white world. If you like “Superfly”, “Gloomy Caesar”, or “Shaft” then you’ll cherish The Mack.

Although it is seldom seen today, in 1970 Constantin Costa-Gavras’ “Z” picked up both the Original York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Characterize and an Academy Award as Best Foreign Film. Director Costa-Gavras walks a very ravishing line here, presenting the characters as archetypes but endowing them yet endowing with enough human emotion to win our interests and sympathies. And the cast is mighty, with Yves Montond, Irene Papas, and Jean-Louis Trintignant particularly famous. The script is at once chilling and covertly droll, jeering at officialdom around the corners of its more serious business, and the overall peek of the film–particularly in the violent crowd scenes–is truly memorable.
The film has been restored to a pristine condition in its novel widescreen and the DVD offers a number of language subtitles (including English) in easy-to-read yellow script. Bonus features are cramped, but include the recent trailer, samples of restoration work, and an extremely bright conversation between novelist Vassilikos and director Costa-Gavras. Consta-Gravas also offers an audio-commentary–in French, which will be frustrating for those who (like me) do not teach the language.
Although some viewers may not even witness the satirical tone of the film, and while some will be achieve off by its distinctly liberal slant, I believe most viewers–including those who don’t normally care for foreign film–will net “Z” a sharp stride, particularly if they enjoyed the likes of JFK or THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE. Time may have dimmed the origins of the part, but sadly the subject of governmental corruption and the mendacity of powerbrokers remains as timely as ever.

Based on a terrific new by Vassilis Vassilikos{and an apt screenplay by Jorge Semprun},this tells the anecdote of the slay of the Greek parliamentarian and doctor Gregory Lambrakis.That it was a political assasination is certain,though the complicity is so multilayered that it appears that the truth will never approach out. Yves Montand is,as usual, helpful as Lambrakis [referred to as Z throughout the film.Z comes from the Greek verb zei, HE LIVES} Irene Pappas is his suffering wife{and widow}. Costa-Gavras travelled this territory often, {the Confession, Missing} though not with this brilliance. The editing is crsip,leading to the sense of breathlessness among the defendents. I will leave the ending to the viewer.This is probably the best political thriller that I have ever seen, and 31 years later,is till ample,if not gleaming

Jack is assigned a current family and finds original friends in this peculiar world outside prison walls, but he is aloof shrinking by the crime that changed his life. How Jack relates to his first female relationship and survives the bigotry of his classmates and city folk and finds a draw to acquire onto life despite his childhood ’sins’ forms the development of this sage.
While the entire cast is favorable, Andrew Garfield’s performance as the guilt ridden needy Eric/Jack is exemplary. There are many issues this film deals with in addition to the trauma of starting life over after imprisonment, issues that are universal in nature and that probe our psyches for answers that are never easily resolved here. Don’t disaster, I won’t give a play-by-play of the epic. I will say that it is a thoroughly touching and spellbinding movie that showcases the life of a young man released from prison for a childhood crime. Watching him open over is lovely noteworthy. His social awkwardness coupled with his failure to depart on from his haunting past, invent the lead character vulnerable and relatable. I can’t stress enough how watchable and sharp the conception is and how well-acted the parts are. I disfavor to be cheesy, but the movie will execute you reflect. It’s got a lot of dim psychological themes and well-developed characters. Additionally, it’s very fast-paced as well as multi-dimensional in that it covers several facets of human emotion and human life. I honestly assume that everyone would be able to pick something (not necessarily the same thing) from this movie.

After reading the gushing, swooning review from the DVD critic in last Tuesday’s NY Times, I immediately ordered the “Special Collector’s Edition” of TO Bag A THIEF from Amazon. When it arrived, I compared it to my modern Paramount “Widescreen Edition” from 2002. Well, the critic was right–there’s simply no comparison. This original version has a 2.0 Dolby Surround soundtrack (in addition to the modern mono version) and a cleaned-up, enhanced, crystal-clear relate, begin to enact. It looks like they took the drab, blurry, obsolete old-fashioned stock and actually washed it, removing years of dirt and grime and smoke and hair and whatever else was there, not to mention a computerized removal of virtually all scratches and glitches. The result is astonishing.

As for the color, notice for yourself. Pay finish attention to the first car hasten down the mountain, the meeting in the flower market, and the costume ball come the ruin. Not to mention the many night scenes on rooftops, where everything is now powerful more visible than before. And Grant and Kelly? Well, the two most gorgeous people who ever lived gaze even more glowing. Wait till you watch the notorious fireworks scene now!
I don’t have to instruct you that this film is fantastic, no matter which version you have. But I can guarantee you that this newly restored version makes it seem better than ever. If you’re as nuts about Hitchcock as I am, it really is worth the upgrade. Be Pleased!

This proceed brochure to adventure and romance is one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most keen films. The attractive vistas of the French Riviera are matched perfectly by the aesthetic duo of Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Robert Burks’ cinematography was nominated for an Academy Award and Edith Head gives Grace Kelly the peek of an American princess. A stunning screenplay from Michael Hayes based on a modern by David Dodge, and a light romantic procure from Lyn Murray combine with all the other elements to obtain this a proper film classic.
American John Robie (Cary Grant) has been living well in a fair villa on the French Riviera for the past 15 years. Once the most illustrious thief in France, the man known as “The Cat” has been aloof for many years. He was in prison during the war when the Germans bombed it. He chose to stop and fight with the French Resistance upon his hasten, and became a myth. It led to his parole, which is rather precarious now that a string of jewel robberies mimicking his right style are occuring on the rooftops of the rich.
The French police want him for it, and his stale pals are enraged that he’s brought them this unwanted attention after all these years. Since the only map to distinct himself is to secure the thief himself, he hooks up with an insurance agent whose company is paying out the claims on all the robberies and begins a game of cat and mouse with the thief. The cheese in the trap is the exquisite Grace Kelly.
Francie Stevens (Kelly) and her mother, Jessie (Jesse Royce Landis), are vacationing on the Riviera. Robie, posing as a hurry tycoon from Oregon, wants to support they and their diamonds company until the thief strikes. Francie throws off his game, however, when she learns early on who he really is and displays a wild enthusiasm for helping him retract! Robie isn’t there to occupy, of course, but has disaster convincing Francie of that when her mother’s jewels are stolen. Coming on the heels of a romantic interlude between the two, it is especially insulting.
That evening together is framed beautifully by Hitchcock, cutting benefit and forth between the fireworks outside on the Riviera and the fireworks going on inside. Kelly is like a prankish kitten with a gleam in her search for, and Grant the older cat, who’s seen her kind of kitten before and isn’t clear he wants to play. There is a fabulous chemistry between the two, who seemed to be made for each other on the cover. A wild coast in her sports car along the fly that has Robie a petite haunted and a picnic in sparkling dress are a treat to glance.
Complicating matters is another sexy kitten, Danielle Foussard (Brigitte Auber) . She is the daughter of one of his traditional pals (Jean Martinelli) and would like nothing better than to hasten off with Robie to South America. But she is a different kind of kitten, perhaps harder to handle than Francie. When her father is murdered and pegged as the thief, she lashes out at Robie at his funeral. By this time, Francie’s wise mom has residence her straight about Robie, and together they region a trap for the right thief at a posh costume ball.
It will lead to an inspiring and animated scuttle on the rooftops as Robie unmasks the imposter. Since he’s enlisted Francie’s wait on this time, he is forced to admit he may not be the lone wolf he belief he was. There is a terrific conclusion as everyone gets what they want, especially the viewer. Sight snappily for Hitch on the help seat of the bus Grant uses to evade the police! This is beautiful escapist entertainment that you can’t befriend but drop in care for with. A expedient film to fetch lost in on any weekend.

So the commercials all promote Jackie Chan and Jet Li. What they neglect to do is mention, I dunno, the **main character** of the film, a young Boston kid named Jason Tripitikas (played by Michael Anganaro) .

So the movie’s basically a kid film. You have a reluctant hero who gets sent to a fantasy version of China, and along the contrivance he learns martial arts and Eastern philosophy.
What did I like about it? The fight scenes are, for the most portion, astounding. They commence off a itsy-bitsy primitive, glean better over time, and then collect absolutely fabulous when you have both Jet Li and Jackie Chan in the film. The fight scenes are weakest when there’s too grand CGI in them — but most of them are purely physical, and quite worthy.

The Chinese fantasy aspects are authentic, if not lawful (worthy in the same procedure the HBO series Rome is not a completely right recounting of events, but an authentic recreation of the tone of aged Rome) . And the Chinese philosophy, for those familiar with it, is space on.
Jackie Chan and Jet Li are astonishing not only as fighters, but comedically as well. (There’s a scene though-provoking rain that had absolutely everyone in the theater laughing hard.) Anganaro puts in a surprising turn physically — he looks like he got a lot of martial training. Yifei Liu is heartbreakingly ravishing.
It’s probably a shrimp scary for young kids — there is some intense violence in the beginning, for instance. And there are sappy moments, as you would request for a kid’s film. But it means well. I have to say that I had a bit of anxiety making out the English of some of the Chinese actors sometimes, tho — and I’m Chinese-American! I effort others might have even worse problems.
Still, overall, I liked it.

Ok recall that popcorn out of the microwave, grab your cola, and status the lights down coarse and bag ready for some kung-fu action.
At first contemplate, the movie seems to be chubby oh wired choreographed fight scenes which I splendid considerable abominate. But the movie took the scenes and made them `ok’. It was like it was telling us “Yes, we know you know it’s wires, but you and we are ok with it”. And I was. It starts with The Monkey King kicking some butt up on top of a deceptive looking mountain top, and then *poof* we obtain out that it was all but a dream. Jason Tripitikas wakes up and heads to his current pawn shop down in Chinatown to take up some more kung-fu movies. As Jason is heading out of Chinatown, he gets stopped by some local thugs/bullies. They perform fun of him about his kung-fu movies and then expose him some of their contain fighting style. After the beat down they snort him to rob them to the pawn shop so they can win the area. The veteran man, incandescent a few moves himself, takes it to them, but only cheated out of the grace of fighting like a man, by a single bullet. Jason runs from the thugs with a staff that the aged man hands him. As Jason tries to secure away, he falls and lands…
…in a different world in a different time. He comes across a man named Lu Yan (Chan) who tells him about his staff. That it once belonged to worthy man named The Monkey King. The Monkey King was tricked into a non attractive fight and before the King was imprisoned he sent his staff away so that someone could arrive rescue him with it. They consume it’s Jason, but is it? As they move to where the Monkey King is imprisoned they reach across Golden Sparrow. A girl seeking revenge for her family’s death. They also approach across The Restful Monk (Li), who is also on a mission to free the Monkey King. With their journeys intertwined, we can only hope for some sweet Kung-Fu action. And boy do we gather it.
Jackie Chan vs. Jet Li was truly fun to ogle. We all know it could’ve been Noteworthy better if they were probably 10 or 15 years younger than they are, but advance on, it was mild a astronomical fight scene. Praying Mantis, Snake, Tiger, Crane, all types of Kung-Fu was old-fashioned. It was definitely something to eye.
The Monkey King vs. The Jade Emperor, even though CGI enhanced and wire enhanced, was magnificent awesome. It made the fact that they were godlike characters more believable. The CG faded for this was spectacular and looked conclude to being loyal.
And there were many more scenes where Lu Yan, The Soundless Monk, the Golden Sparrow are fighting all types of people. You won’t be bored with a lack of Kung-Fu.
I also liked how there was a white haired woman bounty hunter after them. When she fought her hair became fragment of arsenal along with a whip she carried. Now I’ve seen some Kung-Fu flicks with people using their long hair before and the contrivance it seems counterfeit, always made it colossal. In this movie, when she starts to whip her hair around, it’s CG looking (but once again this does not injure it), until it hits the person. For instance on one scene it’s got Lu Yan grabbing her hair and looks totally counterfeit, but at the same time improbable. It felt like a throwback to some of the older movies. Man I loved it.
Some people are complaining that this was too kiddy. Well, I can search for where they are coming from because there isn’t a deep legend here. It did feel like it was more geared towards a `not really having to consider about it’ crowd. And you know what. Obedient. I don’t always have to believe about stuff when I’m watching a trustworthy action flick. I actually had a blast watching this because I consider if it took itself to seriously, most of the fight scenes would have been `eye rolling’ instead of incredible.
In the waste I would say grab this movie up as soon as you can and sit the kids down with a titanic Papa Johns pizza and have a fun time.
P.S. The map the epic was location up, with the kid going from reality into an almost storybook story, to near encourage into reality with things he learned… it sort of makes me deem of The Never Ending Myth but with Kung-Fu instead of a titanic flying dog.

If you care for Dirty Dancing, I highly recommended getting this DVD. It would be a enormous addition to add to your collection!
It is awfully hard not to fetch swept up into the nostalgic heat and sentiment of this unabashedly, and well-done, teen romance. It is, by turns, sexy, comical, melodramatic, jamming (what with that soundtrack chock rotund of some of the best pop hits of the 60s mixed with a few grand fresh songs) and campy. Yet the overriding feeling of uncomfortable and wistfulness, portrayed with staunch talent by Jennifer Grey, as the perfect Baby, transforms this movie into something lasting, something to really treasure. Cynthia Rhodes is absolutely riveting — as usual — in the second female lead; she is a spectacular dancer and electrifying whenever she is on the cloak. The aching feeling of first good love/lust/whatever, here directed at hunky Patrick Swayze, who is by the blueprint an righteous dancer, comes to rotund flower at a Poconos resort. As all manner of soapy subplots depart through their predictable paces, we are treated to the transformation of our young heroine and any number of luscious musical numbers, capped off by the irresistably romantic Time Of My Life — that feeling of fascinating through a romance that has somehow changed your life is captured with a rare sweetness, and it stays with you.

The acting in most happy movies is Bad, so I was delighted to stumble across Derek Magyar’s performance in “Boy Culture”. The character he plays is extremely sexy (mostly because he is guarded almost to the point of being completely unavailable) . The character “X” is a high priced male hustler with a very buy client roster. “X” appears to the outside world to be a hardened, almost heartless, shell of a human being, but the audience is privy to his innermost thoughts. Through this internal dialog, we learn that “X” is “saving himself” for someone who loves him, and has convinced himself that he is secretly in admire with his roommate played by the talented young actor Darryl Stephens of LOGO’s Noah’s ARC. If Derek wasn’t a gifted actor, the character “X” would not have been likable (and the audience wouldn’t have cared what ultimately happened to him) . But, because Derek IS a talented actor, with above average material that borrows from a classic play, the audience is given the opportunity to invest in what happens to “X”.

The legend unfolds through sexy dialog that is believable enough if the audience is willing enough to suspend conception long enough to occupy into a more serious, and sexier, satisfied version of “Dazzling Woman.” If you let out a diminutive groan at the comparison, be aware that both of these films owe a debt to George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion”. While “Radiant Woman” follows a more predictable, and commercial path with the prerequisite Hollywood glad ending which owes more to “My Elegant Lady” than Shaw’s new play, “Boy Culture” is actually closer to the spirit of “Pygmalion”. Gifted character actor Patrick Bauchau, best known for playing the character of “Sydney” for four years on the television series “The Pretender” plays Gregory Talbot, the rich “sculpture” who is intent on molding “X” into his creation. The myth appears to follow predictable paths at times, but is actually more complex than what the jaded viewer may quiz. Thankfully, the characters in this legend often exhibit traits of nobility that elevate them above what they appear to be if only given a cursory inspection. While this film borrows from “Pygmalion,” it doesn’t steal; it veers away from the known sage arc to bag its fill path.

With sexy dialog, the conveyance of raw emotion through his eyes, and a male beauty that rivals the sexiest Titan porn stars, Derek Magyar delivers a performance that is more than worth the average label heed (a rarity these days to be obvious) . He emotes a type of vulnerability without giving up his pseudo-macho hustler persona. His character establishes early on, that he is unavailable (symbolically placing his jacket on the empty seat next to him, showing that he will allow no-one to accumulate too finish) . He is very acid tongued to anyone who tries to take that “barrier” and secure too halt, but it is distinct he is doing this in order to protect himself from damage. He pushes people away with “humor” based in a need for self preservation. He prays often (humorously enough he owns a religious Madonna icon -the Catholic version, not the pop-star) asking for forgiveness. It is easy for the viewer to grant this forgiveness since “X” is actually a very passionate, albeit damaged, character.
If this movie were a wide release Hollywood drama with heterosexual characters, Derek’s performance would be a star making role. Although this film is unlikely to become a blockbuster, hopefully it WILL eventually fetch the audience it deserves. It has the potential to become a cheerful cult classic, and audiences that gaze this diminutive film may well inaugurate to follow this talented cast to other projects. Without spoiling the ending, I found this film to be both unapologetic and hopeful. Considering the lack of pleased cinema that offers either of these outcomes, I am cheerful to recommend this film. I go to movies to sprint and be entertained, and I found this film to be very engaging flee on multiple levels.
The protagonist (played by Derek Magyar) of “Boy Culture” uses the film to confess his issues to the audience, using a pseudonym, X. X worked his design through the University of Washington by prostituting himself to his dentist. After graduation, he built up a clientele of twelve customers willing to pay very high amounts for his services. (A zoom looked like $5,000/ 1 hour session; X must be very estimable indeed.) In order to disguise the source of his income from the IRS, X took on two roommates for zero rent each. One roommate is video store employee Andrew Thompson (played by Darryl Stephens), and the other is promiscuous eighteen-year extinct Joey (played by Jonathon Trent), who lives off an allowance and hasn’t gone past his GED for schooling. One of X’s twelve clients honest died, giving him a chance to interview seventy-nine-year veteran penthouse-dweller Gregory Talbot (played by Patrick Bauchau) as the replacement. This is where the film starts.
X, Andrew, and Joey all want fancy and a better life. Inevitably a triangle formed, sometimes oriented one method, sometimes the other. In general, Joey wants X, X wants Andrew, and Andrew has sex once with Joey. Each partly expresses his worship for the others, but internal issues prevent any resolutions. Gregory develops a strong, confiding relationship with X but holds relieve a key allotment, whose revelation catalyzes the triangle. Everyone moves ahead and gets a tickled next stage.
The movie “Boy Culture” is based reasonably closely on Matthew Rettenmund’s 1995 book of the same name. The colossal changes are that the station moves from Chicago to Seattle, the myth line relating to Joey’s brother is gone, Andrew and his family shift from standard Midwest white folk to middle-class, Oregon-based African-Americans, and Gregory is allowed to disappear from disgrace to trustworthy uncle-figure. We learn X’s dependable name. All of these shifts are well done and add value to the yarn.
The principals all have tall skin scenes. There are club-goers, bartenders, a hilarious hook-up pantomime, and the like to provide more. It’s all really hot!
All of four the principals are splendid; I gaze forward to seeing more of their work coming out. Of the actors of smaller parts, I understanding Peyton Hinson did especially well as Andrew’s faded fiancée, Jill, whose marriage to a pro-football player leads Andrew and X to visit Andrew’s family.
The extras are unusually expedient. There is a Q&A session at the Tribeca premiere with the director (Q. Allan Brocka), Magyar, Trent, and a producer demonstrate. Most indispensable is that the director and the four principals each gets an approximately fifteen miniature interview to discuss the film, his role, and his choices. The viewer gets to know and like these talented artists even more. There are two deleted scenes as well.
The film does an superb job of showing the attractions and inhibitions of joyful relationships and is certainly the best gay-oriented film of the year. It does so well that it is actually one of the best films of the year, period.
